Hauraki Rail Trail - Cycle trip - Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha

When: Friday 27th May

About: Departing 9am from the Cambridge I-Site or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 9am. This day trip is going to start in Thames on the cycle trail and head towards Paeroa.

I will transport yourself and your bike to the starting point in Thames and then will pick you up either in Paeroa or Te Aroha. It is your choice when you would like to finish.

If you don't wish to bike but would like to come out for the day and enjoy a walk or just have a day out please feel free to come along too.

34 kms Thames to Paeroa. 23 kms Paeroa to Te Aroha

Hauraki Rail Trail is mostly flat and winds through rural farmland towards Te Aroha Station.

Hamurana Springs/ Okere Falls/Redwoods

When: Friday 3rd June 2022

About: Departing 9am from the Cambridge I-Site or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 9am.  This is a very interesting day exploring points of interest around Lake Rotorua. First stop will be Hamurana Spring for a walk to the natural spring. Then we will stop for a coffee and lunch at O'Kere Falls Cafe.

Next activity will be the  Redwoods before our last stop at the Polynesian Spa. It is a developed geothermal spa facility in Rotorua, Local Māori acclaimed the therapeutic benefits of the water and bathed for centuries in the acidic pools. 

Investment: $90-00 includes Transport & Driver, Admission to Hamurana Springs,  and Polynesian Spa. Lunch is at your own cost.

East Cape Tour


When: Pick up Friday 10th June – 7 night  to Friday 17th June 2022

About: Leaving Cambridge at 9am Friday 10th June and heading to Opotiki for one night. 

 We will be staying at Eastland Pacific Motor Lodge for one night. I can confirm that there will be a kitchen so we will all bring a plate to share in the evening together.

Saturday 11th June:  The next morning we will travel up to our first activity - Motu Jet Boat Tour in the morning around 10am. It's a 2 hour tour of the Motu at the cost of $110-00 each. I've booked us all in to this activity. In the afternoon we will travel up to Lottin Point where we will be staying for one night. There's a very old church to visit and the Nut house for afternoon tea. Enjoy the beaches along this stretch of coast. Lottin Point Motel has a fully licensed bar and restaurant for our evening meal.

Sunday 12th June:   When we leave Lottin Point we will stop at Te Waha o Rerekohu Area school to see the Oldest Pohutukawa Tree 600 years old in New Zealand.  Our next attraction will be a visit to the East Cape Lighthouse which is sited on Otiki Hill.  The historic East Cape lighthouse stands 154 metres above sea level and is accessed by a walking track of some 700 steps - worth it for the views at the top. We were unable to travel down to the lighthouse in February due to the storm that sweep through this area so lets hope the road is open.​

Sunday 12th & Monday 13th June: Staying 2 nights at Rangimarie House, Anaura Bay with breakfast included. This is a beautiful location to enjoy 2 nights. For our evening meals we will be having a BBQ meal at Rangimarie and the other night we will go to a local hotel.

Today we will walk along New Zealand's longest pier

Tuesday 14th & Wednesday 15th June: Staying 2 nights at the White Heron Lodge Gisborne - great activities in this area - Titirangi which is a historic hill with panoramic city views, Eastwoodhill National Arboretum, Rere Rockslide, Museum and a visit to Mahia Peninsular.

Thursday 16th June: we will be traveling through the gorge to Whakatane at the Quayside Aparments for our last night.

Friday 17th June: We will pack and start our final day of our journey  via Tauranga or Rotorua

Investment for a twin share: The cost per person will be $1,300.00 for accommodation, transport, Museum along with sightseeing which is free to visit. Train or Boat trips, Meals etc are extra. A lot of this area will be free to explore. All bookings have been completed for 8 people.

Paeroa Maritime Park River Cruise


When: Monday 20th June.

About: Departing from the Cambridge i-site or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 9 am. 

 Historical Paeroa Maritime Park and a river paddleboat cruise on the Ohinemuri and Waihou rivers, aboard the Tamati.

Trips are tide dependent and depart at a different time each day. The tides will be perfect for a cruise after our lunch, so bring your lunch or snacks along and enjoy the history of the area. Otherwise we will be stopping in the township of Paeroa to purchase lunch or enjoy a cup of tea.

This is a little gem, home to a very important collection of maritime history relating to the late 19th century when the goldfields of Waihi and Karangahake were being developed and mined.

Afterwards view maritime history and displays of the region including Captain Cook, Northern Steam Ship Company and naval displays at the Historical Maritime Park and Museum, or stroll through the beautiful town of Paeroa.

Tauranga Loop

When: Thursday 30th June.

About: Departing from the Cambridge i-site 9 am or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 9 am.


Today we will travel to the Te Puna Quarry Park which has been transformed in to a world class park. 

We will then travel towards Katikati township. Along with a visit to Waihi township. Here you can wonder through the township from the top to the bottom and enjoy a variety of interesting stores. Our last stop will be in the Karangahake Gorge before we enjoy a scenic drive home. Moderate level of fitness, walking shoes.

Itinerary For Our South Island Trip


When: 3rd August to 10th August 2022

Wednesday 3rd August - Departing 10.55am arriving in Christchurch 12.45pm 

I'll be in touch closer to departure date re pick up times etc.


I've organise a rental van which I will pick up from Christchurch airport and we will return it on the 10th August.


Accommodation in Christchurch

Friday 3rd to 6th August for 3 nights is Southwark Apartments 25 Southwark Street.  It's fairly central to most conviences. 


Activities & Itinerary in Christchurch:

Wednesday 3rd August - When we arrive in Christchurch I will pick up our rental van. Our first activity is a visit to the International Antarctic Centre which is very close to the airport. It is open till 4-30pm so we will have more than enough time to enjoy everything it offers. You must have a warm winter coat, hat and gloves to experience the Storm Dome. Once we have enjoyed our visit we will head to our accommodation.

Thursday 4th August - Today we will be heading to Akaroa.  This is a lovely drive and will take about 1 and half hours.  We will be visiting the Giant House which is a creation by Josie Martin. There are surprises everywhere in this glorious garden - mosaiced steps, an extraordinary sculptural wall mosaic, welded steel sculptures and other creations. A very colorful garden. Opening hours are 11am to 2pm for August. On our return we will have a drive out to Lyttelton.

Friday 5th August - This will be a free day for you all to make your own chooses.

Saturday 6th August -  today you will be travelling on the Trans Alpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth. Departure is at 8-15am so I'll drop you off and then I'll drive over the Arthurs Pass and possibly meet up through your trip then I'll pick you up from Greymouth at 1pm before we head to Hokitika to our next accommodation. Our accommodation is for 2 nights at the Beachfront Hotel Hokitika.

Activities & Itinerary in Hokitika

Sunday 7th August - Today we will visit Hokitika Gorge which is a 1 hour loop walk. Good walking shoes are required. We will also visit the National Kiwi Centre in Hokitika in the afternoon. In the evening we will go to the glow worm caves if we didn't have time the night before. You will be by the beach so you will also get the opportunity on a good evening to enjoy the sun sets and walk along the beach.

Monday 8th August - Today we will pack for our road trip to Hanmer Springs. We will be going through Reefton then Springs Junction, Lewis Pass on to Hanmer Springs.  At that time of year we will not be able to predict the weather so things may change on the day but the end result will be 2 nights in Hanmer Springs. Our accommodation is 2 nights at the Drifters Inn.

Tuesday 9th August - Today we can enjoy a walk along a track which is close to our accommodation called the sculpture walk and take a drive up Conical Hill Lookout if the day allows us to.  Have a soak in the famous hot pools is a must. We will have time to explore this beautiful township.

Wednesday 10th August - Today we will pack for our journey home.

Spa Day - Spoil Yourself

When: Friday 21st October departing 8.45am from the Cambridge i-site or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 8.45am.

​About:  We will be heading over to Rotorua for the day. This is a perfect day to relax and enjoy being pampered. A great pick me up from our time in lock down. Let's break out and rejuvenate our bodies. This is for a limited number of ladies only 6: there's a selection of treatments available and you can choose on the day from a mud wrap, massage, pedicure, manicure or facial. There's a spa and sauna for you to relax in while you enjoy over 4 hours at the spa.

Investment: $180.00 per person. includes all transport, over 4 hours of pure luxury at the spa and a visit to the secret spot.

  Waiheke Day Trip


When: Friday 28th October

About: Departing from the Cambridge i-site 7am or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 7am 


We will set sail from Half Moon Bay with Sealink at 10am to Kennedy Point (Waiheke Island).  This trip will take 1 hour so you can enjoy the crossing and we may even see dolphins.

Once we are on the island we will head to one of the many beaches as well as taking some time out to explore Oneroa Village and the Community Art Gallery. We will enjoy the surrounding that the island offers and visit one of the vineyards for lunch. More information closer to the time.

After a full day sit back and relax while we get set to take the 3pm ferry back to Half Moon Bay then home ward bound.

Taranaki Garden Festival Tour

When: Monday 31st October to Thursday 3rd November

About: The Garden Festival is coming up and hopefully we will get to enjoy it this year. 

I've confirmed our accommodation at the Belt Road Seaside Holiday Park for three nights. Arriving on the 31st October and departing on the 3rd November.

We will travel down to New Plymouth.  Along the way we will stop for refreshments and bathroom stops. Depending on the tide we will stop at the three sisters too.

I'll have Fringe booklets and  the Garden Festival booklets on board which I have requested. I will also send out a plan of the gardens we will be visiting once I get the booklet and organise a plan for our days in the area.

I think at this stage we will leave the decision of evening meals to closer to the time.

Rotorua Day Trip

When: Wednesday 23rd November.

About: Departing from the Cambridge i-site 9am or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 9am  

Today we have a few activities planned.

1. 3D Trick Art Gallery

2. Visit the Blue Lake for Lunch.

3. Altitude at the Redwoods or Tree walk

Today we will travel to Rotorua for a fun filled day.

We will all take part in the 3D trick Art Gallery to marvel at peoples imaginations. Laugh and have fun.

We will then drive to the Blue Lake for lunch - you are welcome to bring your lunch otherwise I will stop so you can purchase some lunch before we head out to the Lake.

 In the afternoon we have 3 Options to choose from :

1. Enjoy a walk through the redwoods following the trail of your choose.

2. Enjoy a tree top walk through the redwoods.  The walk is suitable for families and accessible for all who can walk unaided.

3. Enjoy an Altitude adventure in the Redwoods. If heights don't worry you then this is great fun and you are guided throughout this adventure

Moderate level of fitness, walking shoes.

Whangarei Tour - 3 Nights

When: Wednesday 30th November to Saturday 3rd December 2022

About: Leaving Cambridge on Wednesday 30th November at 9am.  I'll arrange pick up times etc closer to our departure. Our first stop will be Pokeno for refreshments if required and bathroom stop.  We will then head to the Navy Museum and visit Northhead in Devonport. There is a cafe at the museum for our lunch. On our journey north we will take the road less traveled. Our next stop will be at Mangawhai Heads for a walk along the beach or time to stretch your legs.  We then head up the coast through Waipu Cove and Waipu before we get back on to State Highway 1. Our destination is Whangarei Distinction Hotel for three nights. They have on site Portobello Restaurant (Alacarte) Entrees, Mains & Dessert Menu. The dinner menu is from 6pm to 9pm.  There are many other options in the area.

Thursday 1st December - Today we will travel to Tutukaka for our Perfect Day Cruise out to the Poor Knights. It's the ultimate experience, with sight-seeing, kayaking, cave explorations, snorkeling, swimming, snippets of fascinating history and island facts along with great food. This is full day

Friday 2nd December - Today we will visit: Hundertwasser Art Centre - Absolute rationalism, geometric straight lines and the uniformity of modern architecture is abandoned in favour of new values like uniqueness, romanticism, individuality, creativity, especially creativity in harmony with nature. I will organise a guided walk through the art centre. Whangarei Quarry Gardens - this is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry. Enjoy a walk around some amazing plants and sculptures.

Saturday 3rd December - Today we will pack and head for home with us stopping at the Matakana markets which are open on a Saturday morning. Maybe a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping.

Manukau Head Lighthouse Day Trip

When: Two Dates: Friday 16th December  2022 and  Monday 16th January 2023. Departing at 8.30am from the Cambridge i-site or from a pre-arranged location.

About:  We have a good drive to our destination but it will be worth it. We will be stopping before Waiuku for morning tea before we head up the peninsular.  Visitors to the Manukau Heads Lighthouse will experience the serenity of this beautiful natural setting in our native bush. Buy or bring your lunch to enjoy it at the lighthouse.

Great Barrier Island


When: Two dates: Monday 6th March to Friday 10th March 2023. Monday 17th April to Friday 21st April 2023

About: We will fly on the Monday around midday to Great Barrier Island. Luggage Allowance is 20kg per person plus 7kg hand luggage. The flight is 40 minutes one way. We will fly in to Claris Airport then we will pick up a van which I'll rent for the time we are on the island.We will be flying Barrier Air.

We will enjoy some time at the bottom end of the island before we travel to Port Fitzroy which is towards the top of the island to Glenfern Sanctuary which will be our home for the next two nights. We will be staying in Fitzroy House which was built in 1901 and is one of the oldest homesteads remaining on Great Barrier Island. There are many walks from the homestead to enjoy. One of them will take you down to a bay for a swim or kayak. We will be off the grid so enjoy the birds and bush that surrounds you. We are fully self-contained so please bring your own breakfast & lunch requirements.

General Supplies:
There are no supermarkets on the island, but general stores sell a good variety of supplies including fresh fruit, veges, milk & bread and wine, beers and spirits etc. Tryphena has two small shopping complexes, one at Mulberry Grove and the other at the Stonewall Store Village, Pah Beach. Claris, Whangaparapara and Port FitzRoy also have similar outlets. Fuel outlets are situated at Mulberry Grove Store, Claris, Whangaparapara Wharf and Port Fitzroy Wharf. Remember, we’re 90 km’s out to sea… Freight charges are hefty - so expect to pay a little more for food, fuel, groceries & coffee etc.

Tuesday - Today we will be enjoying our surroundings with a talk about the Sanctuary then a loop walk which takes you to a large kauri.

Wednesday  - Today we are booked on the Sundancer Coastal Cruise which leaves at 9am from Whangaparapara Wharf.  We will be allowing 1 hour to drive there so we will be away by 7.45am. You will need warm clothing/towel/togs - lunch will be provided.  We will also be moving accommodation to Great Barrier Lodge which is walking distance from the wharf. We will be having dinner at the restaurant that night.

Thursday-  As we are in Whangaparapara area we will enjoy the walks in the area. We will walk to the Hot Springs which is 1 hour walking on a well maintained track and is flat and easy or if you would like to spend the day around the Lodge you are most welcome to relax there for the day.  Take your togs with you today to enjoy a soak in the hot pools.  In the evening we will enjoy a tour with 'Good Heavens' - You will be required to wear warm clothes and no torches, white lights or phones during this experience.

Friday- Today we will pack and get ready to head home with a flight about midday


Investment : Four nights accommodation, transport to and from Auckland airport, parking fees at Auckland Airport,  return flights to Great Barrier, Sundancer Coastal Cruise, Dark Sky Experience, Bee Tour, Museum admission, Van hire while on the island and driver all included on the tour.
