Step Back In Time - Visit 3 Historic Homes in Auckland

THIS TOUR IS FULL - PLEASE REGISTER YOUR INTEREST FOR OUR NEXT TOUR
When: Thursday 22nd February 2024 - departing 8.30 am from Cambridge i-site or picked up from pre-arranged location before 8.30am.
First we visit Alberton House which opens at 10-30am -Address is 100 Mount Albert Road, Mount Albert. Alberton was built in 1863. In the 1870s the residence of Allan Kerr Taylor and second wife Sophia was transformed into a truly grand Raj-themed mansion, inspired by the country of Allan's birth. When you visit this historic 18-room home you’ll be transported into the world of early Auckland’s fashionable set, where garden parties, mounted hunts and archery were enjoyed with a distinct Victorian backdrop. But Alberton is also a fascinating introduction to the daily domestic life of a colonial family, albeit one aided by an army of servants. On your self-guided tour, look out for the bells and buttons by which the ‘help’ were summoned. In the rather plain servant quarters in the attic, you’ll find traces of their graffiti on the walls.
Then Highwic which is a of Victorian heritage. Address 40 Gillies Ave, Newmarket. Surrounded by a beautiful heritage garden and orchard. It's also a fascinating place for anyone who wants an insight into the well-to-do colonial domestic life. Stepping into the sprawling home of Alfred Buckland, first wife Eliza and then, second wife Matilda during the 1880s would have been a lively experience. Kids everywhere, of all ages. Noisy games. And dolls and toys scattered, mostly on the ‘Children’s Landing’ between the boys’ and girls’ sleeping quarters. With 21 children to Alfred’s name, there was nothing dull about this Victorian family home.
Ewelme Cottage is our Third Historic home. Normally only open on the weekend but the caretakers are happy to open it for us today. Find out the meaning behind the name Vicesimus and the role a vicar played in the stories of this special place at the heart of inner city Auckland.
Investment: $90 includes all transport, driver and entry in to all 3 Historic Houses. Lunch at your own cost.

Thursday 18th April - In the morning we will be departing from Helensville at 9.30am for a 10am departure on the Kewpie.
Departing along the Kaipara River as the barques and brigantines did in past generations, then it’s onto New Zealand’s largest inland harbour the mighty Kaipara where we make our way towards the Kaipara Heads where you can almost reach out and touch the past as we examine the Kaipara’s former life where more than a century ago ships from many nations came to trade for timber, flax and gum. Crossing the Kaipara Heads, we view the magnificence of the headlands with white sandy beaches and the Tasman Sea beyond. From the Kaipara Heads, we journey past the large sand island at the end of the Tapora Peninsula before making our way to the early settlement of Pouto Point where once Harbour Masters, customs officers and port officials were based in the heyday of the shipping industry. From Pouto Point we cruise through the sheltered inland waterways beside the Pouto Peninsula, we see many remote barren beaches accessible only by boat with their white sands backdropped with the green of newly planted pine forests. We then enter the Northern Wairoa River exploring the many bays and inlets where early gum diggers camped as they tried to make a living from the land. We also cruise by many river settlements where early settlers had grand dreams and plans for major communities, however, today could be described as ghost towns. Mid/late afternoon we arrive in Dargaville, our coach will meet us in Dargaville to transport you to your Motel for the evening. Dinner is provided in Dargaville, our coach will transport you from your Motel to dinner and return.
Evening meal is at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club.
Friday 19th April - This morning after breakfast, (supplied in your Motel Unit), our coach will collect you for the journey along the Pouto Peninsula to reboard Kewpie Too at the old Marine station at Pouto Point. Our first stop as we depart Dargaville is the Northern Wairoa Maritime Museum where you will be guided through this facility by one of Dargaville’s local historians. This museum houses the relics and will tell you the story of the many shipwrecks which fell foul of the Kaipara Bar and West Coast as well as the history of the kauri and gum diggers. After your museum visit, we head South in our coach towards Pouto Point, we pass through the old kauri mill towns of Aratapu and Te Kopuru before heading through the rolling farmlands with extensive views of the Kaipara Harbour. On arrival at Pouto Point, we re-board our cruise vessel Kewpie Too for the journey across the Kaipara Harbour to Helensville.
Once we arrive back to Helensville we will head home. We'll return to Helensville approx 6pm and will be heading home to Cambridge once we disembark.
