Winter Getaway - Napier - Gisbourne - Whakatane

When:  Monday 15th August to Friday 20th August 2022. Leaving Cambridge on Monday 15th August at 9am. I'll pick you up from your home.

​About: We will travel down to Taupo with a few interesting stops along the way.  Today we are booked for a 12 oclock river cruise up to the Huka Falls. Firstly we will see the Aratiatia gates open to view the rapids.  Before we leave Taupo we will have some lunch. Our destination in Napier for 2 nights - Shoreline Motel - views along the Marine Parade.

Tuesday 16th August - In the morning we will visit The National Aquarium of NZ - 9.30am for Penguins Feeding and at 10am Reef Fish Feeding - In the afternoon we will enjoy this beautiful city which was rebuilt during the period when Art Deco architecture was fashionable after a devastating earthquake in 1931. We will drive around these lovely buildings before we head to Havelock North to have lunch at Birdwoods offering a ( Gallery, Sculpture Garden and old fashioned sweet shop) or Hygge Cafe. Then depending on the day a visit to Te Mata Peak.

 

Wednesday 17th August - We travel to Gisborne for 2 nights at the White Heron. Along the way we will explore Mahia Peninsula and Morere Hot Springs.

Thursday 18th August - In the morning we will visit Tairawhiti Museum then in the afternoon we will visit Eastwoodhill Arboretum.

Friday 19th August - Today we pack and head through the gorge to Whakatane for our last night. We will be staying at the Barringtons Motor Lodge. Many interesting sights along this stretch of road.

Saturday 20th August - This morning we are booked on the adventures at Awakeri Rail.  We travel home via Rotorua.

Glow Worm Caves

​About: This morning we will be heading towards Waitomo to see the most fantastic caves.

This is a sight to behold gazing up at thousands of glow worms as you glide gently downstream in an inflatable raft through stunning limestone caves and landscape. It simply takes your breath away and is a sight you should not miss.

East Cape Tour

When: Pick up Monday 5th September  – 7 nights to 12th September  2022

About: Leaving Cambridge at 9am Monday 5th September and heading to Opotiki for one night. 

 We will be staying at Eastland Pacific Motor Lodge for one night. I can confirm that there will be a kitchen so we will all bring a plate to share in the evening together.

Tuesday 6th September:  The next morning we will travel up to our first activity - Motu Jet Boat Tour in the morning around 10am. It's a 2 hour tour of the Motu at the cost of $110-00 each. I've booked us all in to this activity. In the afternoon we will travel up to Lottin Point where we will be staying for one night. There's a very old church to visit and the Nut house for afternoon tea. Enjoy the beaches along this stretch of coast. Lottin Point Motel has a fully licensed bar and restaurant for our evening meal.

Wednesday 7th September:   When we leave Lottin Point we will stop at Te Waha o Rerekohu Area school to see the Oldest Pohutukawa Tree 600 years old in New Zealand.  Our next attraction will be a visit to the East Cape Lighthouse which is sited on Otiki Hill.  The historic East Cape lighthouse stands 154 metres above sea level and is accessed by a walking track of some 700 steps - worth it for the views at the top. We were unable to travel down to the lighthouse in February due to the storm that sweep through this area so lets hope the road is open.​

Wednesday 7th & Thursday 8th September: Staying 2 nights at Rangimarie House, Anaura Bay with breakfast included. This is a beautiful location to enjoy 2 nights. For our evening meals we will be having a BBQ meal at Rangimarie and the other night we will go to a local hotel.

Today we will walk along New Zealand's longest pier

Friday 9th & Saturday 10th September: Staying 2 nights at the White Heron Lodge Gisborne - great activities in this area - Titirangi which is a historic hill with panoramic city views, Eastwoodhill National Arboretum, Rere Rockslide, Museum and a visit to Mahia Peninsular. 

Sunday 11th September: we will be traveling through the gorge to Whakatane at the Quayside Aparments for our last night.

Monday 12th September: We will pack and start our final day of our journey  via Tauranga or Rotorua

About: Departing from the Cambridge i-site 7am or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 7am 

 

We will set sail from Half Moon Bay with Sealink at 10am to Kennedy Point (Waiheke Island).  This trip will take 1 hour so you can enjoy the crossing and we may even see dolphins.

Once we are on the island we will head to one of the many beaches as well as taking some time out to explore Oneroa Village and the Community Art Gallery. We will enjoy the surrounding that the island offers and visit one of the vineyards for lunch. More information closer to the time.

After a full day sit back and relax while we get set to take the 3pm ferry back to Half Moon Bay then home ward bound.

Taranaki Garden Festival Tour

When: Monday 31st October to Thursday 3rd November

About: The Garden Festival is coming up and hopefully we will get to enjoy it this year. 

I've confirmed our accommodation at the Belt Road Seaside Holiday Park for three nights. Arriving on the 31st October and departing on the 3rd November.

We will travel down to New Plymouth.  Along the way we will stop for refreshments and bathroom stops. Depending on the tide we will stop at the three sisters too.

I'll have Fringe booklets and  the Garden Festival booklets on board which I have requested. I will also send out a plan of the gardens we will be visiting once I get the booklet and organise a plan for our days in the area.

I think at this stage we will leave the decision of evening meals to closer to the time.

THE FIRST HALF OF THIS TOUR IS FULL.

When: Wednesday 9th November to Friday 18th November 2022.

About: Leaving Cambridge on Monday 9th November at 9am. First pick-up will be around 8.15am so we can all get away by 9am. We will then head to Taupo for a refreshment break and then on to Napier.

Our destination in Napier for 4 nights - This part of the tour is fully booked.

1. hire a bike to enjoy the cycle trails

2. Many walks to choose from - one of my favourites is Sunrise Hut situated on the top of the Ruahine Range

3. Art Deco Trust walk & movie

4. Gannet Safaris Overland - this can be booked for anyone that wishes to do this trip.

I have availability for anyone that would like to fly to Napier in the morning of Sunday 13th November or to Wellington and get the train to Featherston in the afternoon of Sunday 13th November. I would pick you up either from the airport in Napier or the train station in Featherston.​

On Sunday the 13th of November we will pack and head to Martinborough for 5 nights - From Sunday 13th November to Friday 18th November - 95 Dublin Street, Corner Dublin & Regent Streets, Martinborough.   This home has 4 bedrooms - A queen bed in 3 bedrooms and then two bunk beds in the fourth room.

Activities

1. Walk the Putangirua Pinnacles ( A lord of the rings filming location )

2. Rapaki Walk - You can start from Martinborough Village otherwise I can drop you at Te Muna Valley and will take you about 90 minutes to walk back.

3. Visit Cape Palliser, Ngawi (seal colony) & Lake Ferry

4. Visit some Wineries - you can hire bikes to do this

5. Visit Castlepoint

6. Take the train in to Wellington for the day.​

There are many attractions in this area. Stroll through the small towns Featherston, Greytown, Carterton or visit Masterton and enjoy Queen Elizabeth Park, McJorrow Park or Henley Lake Park which are all beside one another.​

Then on Friday 18th November we will pack and head home with a few stops along the way home.

Today we will travel to Rotorua for a fun filled day.

We will all take part in the 3D trick Art Gallery to marvel at peoples imaginations. Laugh and have fun.

We will then drive to the Blue Lake for lunch - you are welcome to bring your lunch otherwise I will stop so you can purchase some lunch before we head out to the Lake.

 In the afternoon we have 3 Options to choose from :

1. Enjoy a walk through the redwoods following the trail of your choose.

2. Enjoy a tree top walk through the redwoods.  The walk is suitable for families and accessible for all who can walk unaided.

3. Enjoy an Altitude adventure in the Redwoods. If heights don't worry you then this is great fun and you are guided throughout this adventure

When: Tuesday 29th November to Friday 2nd December 2022

About: Leaving Cambridge on Tuesday 29th November at 9am.  I'll arrange pick up times etc closer to our departure. Our first stop will be Pokeno for refreshments if required and bathroom stop.  We will then head to the Navy Museum and visit Northhead in Devonport. There is a cafe at the museum for our lunch. On our journey north we will take the road less traveled. Our next stop will be at Mangawhai Heads for a walk along the beach or time to stretch your legs.  We then head up the coast through Waipu Cove and Waipu before we get back on to State Highway 1. Our destination is Whangarei Distinction Hotel for three nights. They have on site Portobello Restaurant (Alacarte) Entrees, Mains & Dessert Menu. The dinner menu is from 6pm to 9pm.  There are many other options in the area.

Wednesday 30th November - Today we will travel to Tutukaka for our Perfect Day Cruise out to the Poor Knights. It's the ultimate experience, with sight-seeing, kayaking, cave explorations, snorkeling, swimming, snippets of fascinating history and island facts along with great food. This is full day

Thursday 1st December - Today we will visit: Hundertwasser Art Centre - Absolute rationalism, geometric straight lines and the uniformity of modern architecture is abandoned in favour of new values like uniqueness, romanticism, individuality, creativity, especially creativity in harmony with nature. I will organise a guided walk through the art centre. Whangarei Quarry Gardens - this is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry. Enjoy a walk around some amazing plants and sculptures.

Friday 2nd December - Today we will pack and head for home with some stops along the way.

Manukau Head Lighthouse Day Trip

About:  We have a good drive to our destination but it will be worth it. We will be stopping before Waiuku for morning tea before we head up the peninsular.  Visitors to the Manukau Heads Lighthouse will experience the serenity of this beautiful natural setting in our native bush. Whangamomona & New Plymouth - 3 Nights - 4 Days

When:  Friday 16th December to Monday 19th December 2022.

About: Leaving Cambridge on Friday 16th December at 9am. There are many interesting things to see as we head to Whangamomona. The forgotten highway is a road between Taumarunui and Stratford which is steeped in history. It contains the only unsealed portion of New Zealand's state highway network. It is remote, mysterious and very scenic. In the middle is our accommodation for our first night's stay. We are booked at the Whangamomona Hotel and will be having our evening meal at the Hotel. Please bring your passport as this may be the only time this year it will receive a stamp.​

Saturday 17th December - In the morning we will complete our journey through to Stratford. Before we leave Stratford we will stop for refreshments and view the Glockenspiel Clock Tower which plays at 10am. The music was accompanied by scenes from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, acted out by wooden figures (made by Nigel Ogle of Hawera's Tawhiti Museum) in the windows near the base of the tower. We then head to Hawera for a visit to the Tawhiti Museum which is open from 10am to 4pm. The Tawhiti Museum is a truly unique experience. The creation of artist Nigel Ogle. Widely acclaimed as the best private museum in the country. Later in the afternoon, we will head to New Plymouth where we are booked for two nights at the Devon.​

Sunday 18th December - Today we have a few options:​

1. Te Rewa Rewa Bridge

2. Puke Ariki - A great museum with a huge shark, Moa and Kiwi exhibits.

3. Lake Mangamahoe

4. A couple of beautiful gardens that are open to the public Tupare or Pukeiti.

Then later that night after our evening meal we will be there for the grand opening of the garden festival lights in Pukekura Park at 8.30pm.​

Monday 19th December - In the morning we will pack for our journey home with a few stops along the way.

Once we arrive in Napier we will go to the Art Deco Trust for a tour & movie about the earthquake and the rebuilding of the area. 

Our destination is Havelock North for 3 nights - Wine Country Motel.

Wednesday - In the morning we are booked for High Tea at Oruawharo Homestead. From there we will head to Sawyers Arms for lunch and then in the afternoon we are expected at Gwavas Homestead for a home & garden tour between 2pm & 4pm.

Thursday -​ This morning we are visiting Duart House at 10am. For lunch we will be going to Hygge Cafe. In the afternoon we have a booking to tour Cape Kidnappers out to the Gannet Colony at 1.30pm. This tour is cross country so is not dependent on tides. Then depending on the day a visit to Te Mata Peak. This evening we are booked at Craggy Range Restaurant.

Friday - Today we will pack for our journey home. We will be traveling home visiting very small towns along the way. Some of them you may have never been to before Sherenden, Otamauri, Waiwhare, Kuripapango, Moawhango before we arrive in Waiouru. Here we will visit the National Military Army Museum and enjoy some lunch before we travel onward.

When: Depart - Thursday 16th February to Monday 20th February 2023.

About: Leaving Cambridge on Thursday 16th February at 8.30 am. I'll pick you up from your home.

We will then travel down towards the Chateau for 2 nights.  Along the way I have a few interesting stops. Once we get to the Chateau you will have time to enjoy your surroundings. There are a few options 1. Gondola ride 2. Walk to Taranaki Falls 2 hours return 3. Visit the information centre.

Friday - Today we will be traveling to Pipiriki for a jet boat ride to the Bridge to Nowhere. It is a short walk once you depart the jet boat so you will require good fitness and footwear. We will be returning to the Chateau at the end of the day.

Saturday - Today we will retrace our steps to Pipiriki and then travel onwards to Whanganui for 2 nights. This may not be a road you have taken before so we will not be rushing and will have time along the way to stop.

Sunday - The grand finale - A Paddle Steamer Cruise up the Whanganui River - Hipango Park Picnic Cruise - Boarding at 8.30am Departing from the Riverboat Centre Wharf at 9am.  You will have the opportunity to see great scenery and once at the park we will enjoy a picnic lunch which I will organise before hand. This particular cruise only goes once a year.

Monday - This morning we will pack and travel a different way home with stops along the way.

Investment: 4 nights accommodation, transport, driver, jet boat ride to Bridge to Nowhere, a ticket for Gondola ride and ticket on Paddle Steamer Cruise - Hipango Park Picnic plus lunch.  Meals not included in the price. - $ 1,500.00

Great Barrier Island

THIS TOUR IS FULL - PLEASE REGISTER YOUR INTEREST FOR OUR NEXT TOUR

When: Monday 6th March to Friday 10th March 2023.

About: We will fly on the Monday around midday to Great Barrier Island. Luggage Allowance is 20kg per person plus 7kg hand luggage. The flight is 40 minutes one way. We will fly in to Claris Airport then we will pick up a van which I'll rent for the time we are on the island.We will be flying Barrier Air.

We will enjoy some time at the bottom end of the island before we travel to Port Fitzroy which is towards the top of the island to Glenfern Sanctuary which will be our home for the next two nights. We will be staying in Fitzroy House which was built in 1901 and is one of the oldest homesteads remaining on Great Barrier Island. There are many walks from the homestead to enjoy. One of them will take you down to a bay for a swim or kayak. We will be off the grid so enjoy the birds and bush that surrounds you. We are fully self-contained so please bring your own breakfast & lunch requirements.

General Supplies:
There are no supermarkets on the island, but general stores sell a good variety of supplies including fresh fruit, veges, milk & bread and wine, beers and spirits etc. Tryphena has two small shopping complexes, one at Mulberry Grove and the other at the Stonewall Store Village, Pah Beach. Claris, Whangaparapara and Port FitzRoy also have similar outlets. Fuel outlets are situated at Mulberry Grove Store, Claris, Whangaparapara Wharf and Port Fitzroy Wharf. Remember, we’re 90 km’s out to sea… Freight charges are hefty - so expect to pay a little more for food, fuel, groceries & coffee etc.

Tuesday - Today we will be enjoying our surroundings with a talk about the Sanctuary then a loop walk which takes you to a large kauri.

Wednesday  - Today we are booked on the Sundancer Coastal Cruise which leaves at 9am from Whangaparapara Wharf.  We will be allowing 1 hour to drive there so we will be away by 7.45am. You will need warm clothing/towel/togs - lunch will be provided.  We will also be moving accommodation to Great Barrier Lodge which is walking distance from the wharf when we tie up after our cruise. We will be having dinner at the restaurant that night.

Thursday-  As we are in Whangaparapara area we will enjoy the walks in the area. We will walk to the Hot Springs which is 1 hour walking on a well maintained track and is flat and easy or if you would like to spend the day around the Lodge you are most welcome to relax there for the day.  Take your togs with you today to enjoy a soak in the hot pools.  In the evening we will enjoy a tour with 'Good Heavens' - You will be required to wear warm clothes and no torches, white lights or phones during this experience.

Friday- Today we will pack and get ready to head home with a flight about midday

When: Tuesday 28th March to Saturday 1st April 2023.

 

Tuesday -  We will fly around midday to Great Barrier Island. Luggage Allowance is 20kg per person plus 7kg hand luggage. The flight is 40 minutes one way. We will fly in to Claris Airport then we will pick up a van which I'll rent for the time we are on the island. We will be flying Barrier Air.

We will enjoy some time at the bottom end of the island before we travel to Whangaparapara. We will be staying at the Great Barrier Lodge for two nights.  It  is walking distance to the wharf in Whangaparapara where we will be meeting the Sundancer for our day cruise. We will be having dinner at the restaurant tonight.

General Supplies:
There are no supermarkets on the island, but general stores sell a good variety of supplies including fresh fruit, veges, milk & bread and wine, beers and spirits etc. Tryphena has two small shopping complexes, one at Mulberry Grove and the other at the Stonewall Store Village, Pah Beach. Claris, Whangaparapara and Port FitzRoy also have similar outlets. Fuel outlets are situated at Mulberry Grove Store, Claris, Whangaparapara Wharf and Port Fitzroy Wharf. Remember, we’re 90 km’s out to sea… Freight charges are hefty - so expect to pay a little more for food, fuel, groceries & coffee etc.

Wednesday  -Today we will board the Sundancer Coastal Cruise which leaves at 9am from Whangaparapara Wharf. You will need warm clothing/towel/togs - lunch will be provided.  In the evening we will enjoy a tour with 'Good Heavens' - You will be required to wear warm clothes and no torches, white lights or phones during this experience.

Thursday -​ In the morning we will walk to the Hot Springs which is 1 hour walking on a well maintained track and is flat and easy.  Take your togs with you today to enjoy a soak in the hot pools.

In the afternoon we will be moving accommodation to Port Fitzroy which is towards the top of the island at Glenfern Sanctuary which will be our home for the next two nights. We will be staying in Fitzroy House which was built in 1901 and is one of the oldest homesteads remaining on Great Barrier Island. There are many walks from the homestead to enjoy. One of them will take you down to a bay for a swim or kayak. We will be off the grid so enjoy the birds and bush that surrounds you. We are fully self-contained so please bring your own breakfast & lunch requirements for these days.  There are general stores so we can stop and purchase anything we need before we arrive at Glenfern.

Friday - Today we will be enjoying our surroundings with a talk about the Sanctuary then a loop walk which takes you to a large kauri.

When: 22nd February to 1st March 2023.

Wednesday 22nd February - I will pick you all up from home with us departing at 9am from Cambridge. We will be heading to Orewa for 3 nights with us having some stops along the way.

Thursday 23rd February - Today we will go to Gulf Harbour, taking the ferry to Tiritiri Matangi Island for the day. This is a bird sanctuary which is predator free. This is a full day.  If you have never been it's one place not to miss. The tickets are purchased ahead of time but are fully refunded if the trip is cancelled on the day. There are two options one is just the ferry ride there and back from Gulf Harbour  $82.00 each and the other is return ferry with guided walk $92.00. Departure from Gulf Harbour is 9-50am. I recommend the guided walk.

Friday 24th February - Today we have many walks to choose from which are in the area. Also we can go to the Island on Friday if Thursday gets cancelled. We can just change these two days around.

Saturday  25th February - we will pack up and head north to our next accommodation at Sun Valley Motel, Wellsford. We have two nights here.  Along the way we will visit:

  • Matakana Sculpture Gardens www.sculptureum.nz

 

Sunday  26th February - Today we will head out to the west coast to explore this area and take our walking boots to enjoy some of the country side and trails which I've listed below.

  • Kauri Point Track 1.5 hours return

  • Ti Tree Point Trail 40 minutes return

  • Manukapua (Big Sand Island) is gorgeous and unique

 

Monday 27th February - Today we are packing then we will head down the west coast stopping at Kaipara coast Sculpture gardens.  09 4205655 Our final stop is at Parakai staying for our last two nights at the Guest House Parakai Geothermal Motel. 09 4208260. Please bring your togs.

 

Tuesday 28th February - Today we will head to South Head to explore this area calling in to te rau puriri Regional park which has access to the beach via farmland with views of native bush and shore birds.

 

Wednesday 1st March - Today we will pack to head home with a stop at Muriwai Beach for lunch.
