North Head Historic Walk

About: Travel to Auckland North Head to explore the defenses that were placed on the headland to protect Auckland from feared Russian invasions. North Head is considered to be the most significant historical coastal defense site in the country. We will be going to the Navy Museum first for a tour which is at the base of North head. There is a café beside the Museum where we can have lunch.

First protected as a reserve in 1972 when it was included in the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park.

Tauranga - Waihi Loop Trip

When: Thursday 5th August 2021 – Departing 9am from Cambridge i-site or earlier at a pre-arranged location.

About: Today we will head to the Historic Village in Tauranga for a stroll around the village.  After we have some time exploring the shops (especially the secondhand ones)  we will head towards Katikati and  Waihi.  Stopping along the way at some interesting points of interest and in Waihi township.   Karangahake Gorge will be our last highlight before we start our journey home.

Cycling Trip - Te Aroha to Matamata

Lower Northland Tour

Leaving Cambridge on Wednesday 1st September 2021 at 9am. I’ll be picking you all up from your home.  As we venture north we will stop at the Navy museum which is at the base of North Head and is also a most interesting area full of history.

We have accommodation booked for 3 nights at Owera.

Thursday – 2nd September we are going to Gulf Harbour and taking the ferry to Tiritiri Matangi Island for the day. This is a bird sanctuary which is predator free. This is a full day.  If you have never been it’s one place not to miss. The tickets are purchased ahead of time but are fully refunded if the trip is cancelled on the day.

Friday – 3rd September we have several options:

  • Alice Eaves Scenic Reserve. Old North Rd, Orewa. 30–45 mins. …

  • Orewa Esplanade Reserve. Hibiscus Coast Highway, Orewa – 45–60 mins. …

  • Orewa Millennium Walkway. Orewa Township. …

  • Maygrove Reserve. Riverside/Lakeside Drives, Maygrove, Orewa. …

  • Pohutukawa Reserve/Orewa Estuary.

 

Saturday  –  4th September we will pack up and head north to our next accommodation at Sun Valley Motel, Wellsford which is all booked and confirmed. Along the way we will visit:

  • Matakana markets

  • Omaio Gardens –  this garden is in the Tawharanui Peninsula

  • Matakana Sculpture Gardens www.sculptureum.nz

 

Sunday  – 5th September we will explore the west coast area and enjoy some of the country side trails which I’ve listed below:

  • Kauri Point Track 1.5 hours return

  • Ti Tree Point Trail 40 minutes return

  • Manukapua (Big Sand Island) is gorgeous and unique

 

Monday  – 6th September we will head down the west coast stopping at Kaipara coast Sculpture gardens, then on to Parakai to stay for our last two nights at the Guest House Parakai Geothermal Motel. All confirmed we are in the villa.

Tuesday – 7th September we will head to South Head to explore this area calling in to te rau puriri Regional park which has access to the beach via farmland with views of native bush and shore birds.

Wednesday – 8th September we will head home with a stop at Muriwai Beach for lunch.

We have 8 for this trip but happy to repeat it if there’s enough interest for another.

Coromandel - Overnight Tour

When: Monday 13th September 2021 – Departing Cambridge 9am from a pre-arranged location – Returning Tuesday 14th September 2021 – 1 Night – on a private tour of the Coromandel area.

About: I will pick you up from your home with your overnight bag before we head toward Thames for our first stop.  There is nothing like a couple of days away, taking time for yourself. Sit back and enjoy the drive along the coast before we arrive at Driving Creek Railway in the Coromandel Township.  Enjoy the mountain train ride through native forest with stunning views over the Coromandel town and beyond.

From there we will head to Mahamudra Centre (Tibetan Buddhist place of retreat) for a cup of tea and a stroll through the gardens at the beginning of spring I’m sure it will be stunning. After our visit, we will head to Whitianga for the night. There is a variety of places to choose from for your evening meal.

The next day we are booked for a boat cruise.

Spring Fling - Train Journey

Departing Cambridge at 9am

I will be picking you all up from your home before we head south.

Leaving on Friday 17th September 2021 from Cambridge and taking the road least traveled to Feilding.  Along the way we are stopping at the Chateau for lunch.

We will be staying two nights at the Fitzherbert Regency Motor Lodge.

On Saturday the 18th we travel to Feilding to join the Spring Fling train to Taihape. On a diesel hauled train you will see the rugged landscapes of the Rangitikei as your journey takes you over massive viaducts and through the Mangaweka tunnel on its way to the Taihape township.

Tour 1 Taihape Town Tour
Get a window into the local life of a rural town often only valued for its great coffees and loos. The back streets are filled with stories of the past, present and future. You will hear about some of the 20 buildings of grandeur and structures of significance on a minibus with a competent driver and a knowledgeable guide.
For example, you will visit the rail turntable and hear about the way it was reinstalled in Taihape, visit the anchor commemorating HMS Achilles, admire the grandeur of the 1924 built Grandstand, pass the controversial 10 year old Taihape Area School which recently made news because it requires a rebuild, then up to the iconic corrugated iron gumboot for a photo shoot, past the grand Majestic Theatre to mention just a few and return to the Railway Station. 30-minute tours

Tour 2 Garden Tour to Gordon Colliers
This renowned gardener and plantsman is still at the top of his game and not about to hang up his shears. Returning to Taihape after a lifetime of giving his everything to the gardens he is developing yet another on the outskirts of town and has offered his new site for those interested in his expertise and with an interest in how to start from a blank canvas. After a 35 year tenure, Titoki Point Gardens attract more than 5000 visitors a year. He then moved to Taupo and developed another garden called Anacapri which recently was awarded six stars from the New Zealand Gardens Trust. Gordon has written articles for lifestyle magazines, speeches and several books and was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. Taihape is blessed to have his gardening passion and expertise just up the road and privileged to share it with those with a real love of flora.  30-minute tour

All aboard for a return trip back to Feilding at 3.30pm arriving back in Feilding at 6.30pm.

The following morning we will pack for home taking State Highway 1. I'm sure we will find some interesting stops along the way home.

Rail Cart Tour - Awakeri

When: Monday 20th September 2021 – Departing 9am from Cambridge i-site or earlier at a pre-arranged location.  (If weather is not suitable on the day then we will change it to another day in the week either (17th, 21st or 27th)

About: Arriving in Awakeri for a departure time for our Rail Cart tour starting at 12.30 pm.  This is an unforgettable experience so don’t miss your seat on this tour.
We travel 20 km return trip over bridges & tunnel.
A most interesting experience with a sausage at the last station.
When our Rail Cart journey has finished we will head home via Tauranga.
This is a day tour only with no overnight stay but if you have a group who would enjoy a longer stay in Whakatane please let me know.

Feilding Train Trip

If you love a train journey, then this is one to experience! 

When:  Leaving on the 2nd October 2021 from Cambridge and taking the road least traveled to Fielding.

About: We will be staying two nights in Palmerston North.

On Sunday morning 3rd we will travel to Fielding to board the train for a trip around the block to Wellington via Masterton. The journey will take us through Wairarapa before we go through one of the longest tunnels in New Zealand. We return through the western suburbs of Porirua, Paraparaumu to Palmerston North and Fielding.

Monday 4th October we will travel to Napier for one night before we head home to Cambridge. Loads of interesting places to stop along the way and time to walk along Marine Parade in Napier.

Investment: $950.00.  (Shared accommodation an extra $200 for a single room for 3 nights.)

Pricing includes: 3 nights accommodation, transport, driver, a ticket for the day’s train journey all included on the tour.  Meals not included in the price.

Rotorua - Redwoods Nightlights Treewalk

When:  Wednesday 6th October 2021 Departing at 4pm from the Cambridge I-Site or earlier from a pre-arranged location.

About: Travel to Rotorua for dinner at Eat Street – one of Rotorua’s coolest hot spots in the city. At the lake end of Tutanekai Street, you will enjoy quality restaurants, cafés and bars as well as the famous Lady Jane’s Ice Cream Parlour. Paeroa Maritime Park River Cruise

When:  Friday 22nd October departing 9am from the Cambridge i-site or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 9am.

About: Historical Paeroa Maritime Park and a river paddleboat cruise on the Ohinemuri and Waihou rivers, aboard the Tamati.

Trips are tide-dependent and depart at a different time each day. The tides will be perfect for a lunchtime cruise, so bring your lunch or snacks along and enjoy the history of the area. This is a little gem, home to a very important collection of maritime history relating to the late 19th century when the goldfields of Waihi and Karangahake were being developed and mined.

Afterwards view maritime history and displays of the region including Captain Cook, Northern Steam Ship Company and naval displays at the Historical Maritime Park and Museum, or stroll through the beautiful town of Paeroa.

They have new wharf’s being built, so fingers crossed they are all completed.

Glow Worm Cave Tour

When: Wednesday 27th October 2021 – Departing 9am from the Cambridge i-site or earlier at a pre-arranged location.

This morning we will be heading towards Waitomo to see the most fantastic caves.
This is a sight to behold gazing up at thousands of glow worms as you glide gently downstream in an inflatable raft through stunning limestone caves and landscape. It simple takes your breathe away and a sight you should not miss.

Taranaki Garden Festival Tour

When: Monday 1st November – Thursday 4th November

About: I’ve confirmed our accommodation at the Belt Road Seaside Holiday Park for three nights. I have booked 5 cabins with their own bathrooms, bedding provided and towels.  Arriving on the 1st November and departing on the 4th November.

Leaving Cambridge at 8am and will start picking you all up from your homes to begin our journey to New Plymouth along the way stopping for refreshments and bathroom stops.

I have arranged the visits so we get to see all the gardens of interest in the area before we move on. eg. Stratford, Inglewood and New Plymouth, Fringe and Sustainable Gardens with the least amount of traveling required. I realize there is a lot of gardens to see so we will just do what you can all manage and once you have had enough or seen sufficient for the day we can head back.

I will make the list of gardens up before we leave and send it out to all those that are going ahead of time. At that stage, you are welcome to let me know of a garden that you wish to visit so it’s on the program.

Maximum 8 people.

Road Trip to the Tree Sisters

When: Thursday 11th November 2021 – Departing Cambridge i-site 8 am or pick up from  a pre-arranged location

About: On the North Taranaki coast, near Tongaporutu, you can see two 25 metre rock formations known as the Three Sisters. At low tide, we will be able to walk alongside the river and around the point to see them up close and also walk along the beach a little. Interestingly, there were four sisters at the turn of the century, but the sea is claiming them back one at a time.  We will then return via the Westcoast from Awakino to Marokopa exploring a couple of interesting spots. This is a full and long day trip so bring your lunch and some nibbles.

Orewa Overnight & Tiritiri Matangi Tour

When: Friday 19th November to Saturday 20th November

Leaving Cambridge on Friday 19th November 2021 at 9am.

I’ll be picking you all up from your home. You are all very welcome to pack a lunch to enjoy along the way otherwise we will be stopping at rest rooms and places to purchase food along the way. As we venture north we will stop at the Navy museum which is at the base of North Head and is also a most interesting area full of history.

We have one nights accommodation in Orewa  In the afternoon you are welcome to walk the beach and enjoy an evening meal at one of the many restaurants available to us.

Saturday 20th November:  we will head to Gulf Harbour where we will take the ferry to Tiritiri Matangi Island for the day. This is a bird sanctuary is predator free. This is a full day.  If you have never been it’s one place not to miss.

Tree Church Garden & Picnic Lunch

When: Wednesday 1st December 2021. Departing 10am from the Cambridge i-Site or earlier at a pre-arranged location.

About: Morning tea is available – booked a week in advance.

Open-air painting or just enjoy the garden.

This is a beautiful garden that Barry has sold but we are very fortunate and extremely lucky that the new owners are going to maintain tours along with other events. Painting is one of the new owner’s passions and they would love to see people enjoying painting there, so if you would like to bring your painting equipment along, please do so.

Take the opportunity to stroll through the gardens. The Tree Church alone is a fine masterpiece and Barry was very hands-on with the garden and he loves sharing his knowledge on how he accomplished this incredible garden transformation into the stunning landscape we see today.

There is a beautiful area to have your lunch so please bring your picnic lunch.

Paeroa Maritime Museum Christmas Lights

When: Friday 10th December – Departing 5pm from the Cambridge i-site or earlier at a pre-arranged location.

About: A magical evening and one not to be missed. Get into the festive season and come and join us for a special evening. We will go directly to Paeroa where we will enjoy an evening meal in the township. Your choice of location. At 8.15pm we will arrive on-site at the Museum to enjoy their opening night at 8.30pm.The evening will finish when everyone is ready to go home.

Lavender Farm Tour

About: Heading to the lavender farm today for a very interesting tour.

The lavender farm is run and operated by the owners. Their knowledge is so interesting on how they make all their products that they sell in the shop. These products will be available for you to purchase on the day. On the way home, we will enjoy the Rose Garden and lunch in Te Awamutu.

Waihi to Paeroa to Te Aroha

When:  Thursday 20th January 2022  –  9.00am Lauriston Park or earlier at a pre-arranged location.

About: We will head to Waihi where we will start our bike ride.

This is a great trip through the gorge to Paeroa and then for those that wish to go that little bit further then I’ll be there as a support vehicle through to Te Aroha.

Tarawera Falls Day Trip

When: Thursday 3rd February 2022.  Departing at 8.30am from the Cambridge i-site or from a pre-arranged location

About: Going to Kawerau via the top of Lake Rotorua to Tarawera Falls. Bring your lunch so you can enjoy it while sitting beside these picturesque Falls. There is a 20-minute walk once we get to the car park to the Falls so please wear suitable walking shoes. Our homeward trip will be via Tauranga.

East Cape Tour

When: Pick up Tuesday 8th February – 7 nights Return Tuesday 15th February 2022

About: I will be picking you all up from home and leaving Cambridge at 9am then heading to Te Kaha with stops along the way. Stopping at McLaren falls etc

Tuesday 8th February : Staying 1 night Te Kaha Beach Hotel – walk on the beach and enjoy the sea.

Wednesday 9th February : Staying 1 night – Between Cape Runaway and Hicks Bay at Lottin Point Motel which does have a fully licensed bar and evening meals.

Thursday 10th February : Staying 1 night at Rangimarie House, Anaura Bay with breakfast.

Friday & Saturday: Staying 2 nights – White Heron Lodge Gisborne – Titirangi which is a historic hill with panoramic city views, Eastwoodhill National Arboretum, Rere Rockslide, Tairawhiti Museum or Gisborne City Vintage Railway which is open for excursions on Thursday and Saturday. On our way to Waikaremoana we will visit Mahia Peninsular.

Sunday & Monday : Staying 2 nights Vista Motor Lodge -Monday 14th February we will travel to Waikaremoana to enjoy some lovely walks in this area. There was no accommodation available so we will just make it a day trip.

Return trip will be via Napier & Taupo

Investment for a twin share: The cost per person will be $1,300.00 for accommodation, transport, Museum along with sightseeing which is free to visit. Train or Boat trips, Meals etc are extra. A lot of this area will be free to explore. All bookings have been completed for 8 people including myself.

Kawhia Harbour

When: Friday 22nd April 2022 – Departing 8.30am from the Cambridge I-Site or pick up from a pre-arranged location before 8.30am.

About: Heading to the West Coast and out to Kawhia. Depending on the tide as it does need to be low tide to enjoy the hot pools. . From there we will start our journey exploring this area. There’s a huge amount of history in this area and some very interesting places along the way.

This is a beautiful part of the country from the coast to some of our untouched bush.

Please bring your lunch.
